Oh, Sanju Samson! You beast of a batsman! That is the only thing that was on my- hell! everyone’s mind- as the swashbuckling Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman once again displayed why he is one of the highly-rated white-ball batsman of the modern-era. It was an enthralling display of pure and classy strokeplay in Sharjah as Sanju Samson announced himself on the 2020 IPL arena with a 19-ball half-century- the second-fastest by a Rajasthan Royals batsman in IPL history.
The Royals did not get off to the best of starts as Yashasvi Jaiswal fell too Deepak Chahar in the 3rd over of their innings. Sanju Samson, however, did not let that affect his game as he hit top gear right from the very outset, smoking the fast bowlers for some disdainful sixes.
Samson’s strokeplay ensured that RR racked up 54 runs in the powerplay, but little did that everyone knew that he was just getting started. Dhoni turned to his spinners and Sanju Samson pounced onto them immediately. He greeted Ravindra Jadeja with back-to-back sixes over long-on and long-off and followed it up with an absolute annihilation of veteran Piyush Chawla in the next over.
The first ball that Chawla was smoked over his head; the second ball was carved over extra-cover. He brought up his 50 off his 19th delivery with a single before smashing the leg-spinner for another six over, one that was carted over the roof. Chawla lost the plot as he overstepped on the very next delivery, leading to a free-hit which Steve Smith smaked over extra-cover. Chawla conceded 28 runs in his 1st over.
Samson smoked one more six each off Piyush Chawla and Ravindra Jadeja before the carnage was finally halted with him mistiming it straight to Deepak Chahar.
