Royal Challengers Bangalore have spend majority of the time this season at the bottom of the points table. They started the season with six consecutive losses which pretty much threw them out of the race for the playoffs. However, a late resurgence has seen them win four of their last six games and now they mathematically stand a chance of making it to the next stage. With 8 points from 12 games, the Royal Challengers are currently languishing at the bottom of the points table.

In order to stand a chance of making it to playoffs, they need to win both of their remaining games. A win for Royal Challengers in both the games mean a defeat each for Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad. In such a case, Royals can finish with 12 points at most given they beat the already qualified Delhi Capitals. The second condition is that Sunrisers must lose to Mumbai Indians on May 2, and stay on 12 points.

The third condition is that the winner of the game between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders must lose their final game. Kings XI play theirs at home against Chennai Super Kings, while Knight Riders play theirs away, in Mumbai. The winners of the Kings XI v Knight Riders game will then have 12 points, while the losers will have either 10 or 12 points depending on the result of their final game.

So to sum it up, if Royal Challengers win their final two games, Sunrisers lose theirs, Royals beat Capitals, the winner of the match between Kings XI and Knight Riders  lose their final game and the losers win theirs, then five teams – Royals, Royal Challengers, Kings XI, Sunrisers and Knight Riders – will be on 12 points, leaving net run-rate to decide who qualify for the playoffs.

In case, Royals lose to Capitals and Kings XI and Knight Riders lose their final games, only three teams  – Sunrisers, the winner of the game between Kings XI and Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers themselves – will end with 12 points.

In that case, it will all come down to the net run-rate. The Royal Challengers currently have  the lowest (-0.694) net run-rate and need to improve it in order to stand a chance of making it to the next stage. As of now, Sunrisers and Knight Riders have positive net run-rates and Royal Challengers will need both the teams to lose their two games with a big margin.  If Royal Challengers, Kings XI and Sunrisers are the teams to finish on 12 points, then there’s some hope for Royal Challengers but only if Sunrisers lose both their remaining games by a big margin.
