Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh all-rounder, has reflected on his two-year suspended sentence, adding that a player of his stature shouldn’t have done the mistake that he did but also reckoned that people are bound to make mistakes, and his example should serve as a lesson to all the youngsters.

Shakib Al Hasan was handed a two-year suspended term by the ICC after he failed to report the corruption approaches by the corruptors on two separate occasions- during a 2018 tri-series and one of the matches of the IPL- to the Anti-Corruption Unit.

“You have to be honest,” Shakib said. “You just can’t lie to the people and pretend different things. Whatever happened has happened. People are bound to make mistakes. You are not 100%. The important thing is how well you can come back from those mistakes. You can tell other people not to make those mistakes. Tell them the path so that they never take those paths.” Shakib Al Hasan told ESPNCricinfo.

Shakib added that he wanted to be honest about the whole thing from the very first day and while it was his mistake that he did not tell about the approaches by the bookmakers beforehand, he has apologized for it and is now looking to move ‘forward’.

“It could have happened to someone else and I would have learned from him, but it happened to me so other people can learn from me. I wanted to be honest from the first day. I didn’t hide anything from the guys when they were asking me questions. I will say the straightforward things. I made mistakes. It shouldn’t happen for a player like me. I apologised for it, and I want to move forward, I want everyone to learn from it and never make these mistakes,” Shakib Al Hasan said.

Shakib Al Hasan’s ban will end on October 29th.
