Shoaib Malik, former Pakistan captain, recently jogged down memory lane and revealed a special advice that he got from Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh post his sides’ memorable 180-run win over India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final.
India and Pakistan squared in a high-voltage grand finale of the 2017 Champions Trophy at the Oval. Coming into the team, defending champions India were billed as heavy favorites courtesy their form and also because they had beaten Pakistan convincingly in the group-stages.
However, true to their nature, Pakistan testified their ‘mercurial’ status to the hilt as they trounced India by 180 runs to lift the title.
“In terms of winning that tournament in 2017, yes it was a great feeling to win another ICC Trophy, but I have another memory that is very special to me,” Shoaib Malik told PakPassion.net.
‘Don’t miss out on this special moment’- Shoaib Malik recalls Yuvraj Singh’s ‘special’ advice
Post the match, Indian and Pakistani players were spotted sharing a laugh with each other. Later that evening, Malik was having a conversation with Yuvraj Singh where the left-hander has him an advice, which the Pakistani all-rounder reckoned was a prime example of how cricket generates ‘good friendships’.
“I remember after the final at The Oval against India sitting in the dining hall talking to Yuvraj Singh and we were just chatting and he said, ‘Your team-mates are celebrating, don’t miss out on this special moment, you should be celebrating with them.’ It is just a small example of how cricket generates very good friendships no matter where we come from.” Shoaib Malik said.
In the same interview, Shoaib Malik also went on to talk about India-Pakistan bilateral relationship, saying that world cricket needs the arch-rivals to resume their bilateral ties.
Both countries last played a bilateral series in 2012, post which their meetings have been restricted to Asia Cups or ICC events.
