Shreyas Iyer was made the captain in 2018 when Gautam Gambhir stepped down halfway through the tournament. While that very edition did not pan out well for the franchise, they reached the playoffs last year for the first time since 2012. Delhi Capitals’ bedrock of success were Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ishant Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Kagiso Rabada, and many others.

Shreyas Iyer credited Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting for making his captaincy job easy last year as the pair served as their mentors. The stylish batsman feels confident, proud, and more responsible after undergoing a successful stint with the national side. He added that it allows him immense self-belief to be dominant at this position and win everybody’s hearts.

I was comfortable last year too. I had two big minds in my team, Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting. They made my job easy. This time, having been consistent in the Indian team, it gives me a lot of pride and also responsibility as a player to be captaining such an amazing team. It has given me a sense of belief that I can really dominate at this position and also win everyone’s hearts at the same time,” Iyer said as quoted by Sportskeeda.

The 25-year old further hailed his teammates’ cooperation towards himself and reveals never getting complaints from them and only support. Shreyas conceded the experience of senior players holding plenty of importance since their advice and opinions could come in very handy.

You know all of them, they are great team guys. They don’t complain about anything. They never go against my decisions because they know I am a young captain and also, it’s important to support me at the same time. Their experience really matters to me because I can go up to them and ask them for advice and opinion,” he added.
