India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin paid attention towards the domestic cricket and participated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final soon after Team India whitewashed the visitors Bangladesh in the two Tests at home. Ravi Ashwin’s contribution to the Indian team against Bangladesh was commendable and he carried out the momentum by doing his bit in Dinesh Karthik-led Tamil Nadu’s entry into the peak clash, the veteran off-spinner stole the spotlight for most parts of an intense finale of the T20 tourney on Sunday (December 1).

Ravi Ashwin turned the game on its head as he managed to pick two wickets in two balls, dismissing the top batsmen KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal and after which, the off-spinner emulated Imran Tahir’s running celebration. Later on, in the innings, Ashwin almost did an MS Dhoni with his finishing skills before performing Mushfiqur Rahim’s ‘premature celebration’. However, the game took a U-turn after the set batsmen Vijay Shankar was run-out.

Vijay Shankar who was batting on 43 managed to pick up a double in the penultimate ball in the hope of getting back on strike. However, he was way short of the crease as he was run out by KL Rahul and Manish Pandey. When Tamil Nadu required 3 off the last ball, Murugan Ashwin who was at the striker’s end managed to pick up just a single as Manish Pandey-led Karnataka sealed the thriller by a run.

Talking about the match, Karnataka batted first and Manish Pandey played a captain’s knock by scoring an unbeaten 60 off 40 balls. He steered the team to 180/5. In response to colossal total, Tamil Nadu showed no teeth in the top order as Vijay Shankar and Baba Aparijith played good knocks and pushed Tamil Nadu towards the end of the chase before they lost by a run.

Ravi Ashwin was the best bowler for Tamil Nadu as he returned with bowling figures of 2/34 and remained unbeaten on 16 (off 9 balls) but failed to steer the team past the finishing line.
