Young upcoming batsman Shubman Gill’s magnificent half-century on the second day of the final warm-up game against Australia A in Sydney has drawn praises from Wasim Jaffer. Wasim Jaffer, who was a prolific batsman in first-class cricket, arguably knows a thing or two about accumulating runs at the highest level even though he could not be hugely successful. The former Indian opener took to his official Twitter handle to heap praises on Shubman Gill.

Shubman Gill indeed produced a knock worthy of praise on the second day of the final practice game in Sydney. The 22-year old put the visitors’ innings back on track after Prithvi Shaw’s early departure by scoring a confident half-century. The right-handed batsman shared a century partnership with Mayank Agarwal and departed for 65 off 78 balls, laced with ten boundaries. Gill also scored 43 runs in the first innings.

With two notable knocks, the Punjab batsman has made an irrefutable case to open in the first Test in Adelaide alongside Mayank Agarwal, pushing Prithvi Shaw in the pecking order. Shubman Gill has been doing rounds around the Indian set-up for quite some time now and while the selectors named him in the squad several times, he is yet to get a cap. There could not be a better occasion than the day and night Test in Adelaide to mark his debut.

Below is Wasim Jaffer’s tweet for Shubman Gill:

The tourists are currently in the driver’s seat as they are 222/3 in the second innings. After managing only 194 runs in the first innings, the bowlers responded by skittling Australia A for 108 to take an 86-run lead. Thus, these are excellent signs ahead of the first of the four Tests on the 17th of December.
