India’s superiority over Australia in the shortest format of the game continued as the Men in Blue thrashed the team from Down Under by 9 wickets (DLS method) in the rain-affected first T20 International at Ranchi on

Batting first, the Australian batsmen flopped once again as India managed to restrict the visitors for a modest total. In the absence of their skipper Steve Smith, Australia had their task cut out but they fared poorly. They began their innings poorly as stand-in skipper David Warner departed after scoring just 8. However, the in-form Aaron Finch launched a good counterattack to take his team to 49 for one at the end of the powerplay before Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Glenn Maxwell to open the floodgates.

Australia’s middle-order faltered once again as Travis Head, Moises Henriques and Dan Christian departed for single-digit scores. The visitors kept on losing wickets at regular intervals, huffing and puffing to 118 for 8 in 18.4 overs before rain halted the game and eventually ended their innings.

In reply, India, while chasing a revised total of 48 runs in 6 overs, began shakily as the in-form Rohit Sharma was castled by Nathan Coulter-Nile in only the second over. However, an unbeaten partnership of 38 runs between Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli took the hosts home comfortably in the end.  The win helped India to win its seventh consecutive T20I against Australia.

After the game, out-of-favour middle-order batsman Suresh Raina took to Twitter to congratulate the team and Kuldeep Yadav who was adjudged the Man of the Match for taking 2 for 16 in his 4 overs.

“Great achievement on winning 7th t20 in a row against the Aussies. Well done, boys! Congrats on the man of the match award, @imkuldeep18 ✌️?,” Raina tweeted.
