Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018: Irfan Pathan Dropped from Baroda Team; Nayan Mongia's Son Receives Maiden Call-Up

India all-rounder, Irfan Pathan, has once again been ignored for a place in the Baroda team, as he has not been included in the squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Zonal League. It could affect his chances of getting picked up by an IPL team on the auction day on January 27 and 28.
Last year as well, Pathan went unsold despite playing both Zonal and Inter-Zonal League, but this year, he would not play any of the two tournaments, which would have an impact on the auction day.
Pathan was dropped from the Ranji Trophy team last year, and young Deepak Hooda was made the captain of the side, a scenario which has continued, as Hooda has been appointed captain in the shortest format as well.
Yusuf Pathan will be available for the team after January 10. Hence, he was not selected,
“Yusuf was on medication and he had sent the prescription to the BCCI as is required according to the rules. He was advised to not play till January 10. He called up and informed us about it. So he has not been picked up for the T20 team,” Snehal Parikh, BCA
secretary told TOI.
There are a total of three new faces in the side who did well in U19 cricket. Nayan Mongia’s son, Mohit Mongia, Urvil Patel and Ninad Rathwa are three new faces. Both Patel and Rathwa were the part of one of the squads in the U19 Challenger Trophy but missed the bus to U19 World Cup.
On the other hand, Mongia recently shone for the junior side, leading to his selection. He played a record innings of 260 in the Coach Behar Trophy, thus breaking the record of his father, who played an innings of 224 for Baroda. The record made by senior Mongia was the highest score for 30 years until his son broke his record.
“All the three play for Baroda U-19 team
and have performed well. The selectors are in process of rebuilding the team and
they believe in giving chance to performing youngsters,” Parikh added.
Krunal Pandya, who is expected to be retained by IPL franchise Mumbai Indians has also been selected in the Baroda squad. He was the part of India A squad for the tour of South Africa early this year. Baroda will face Mumbai, Gujarat, Saurashtra and Maharashtra in the T20 tournament.
Squad: Deepak Hooda (Captain), Atit Sheth (VC), Kedar Devdhar, Swapnil Singh, Vishnu Solanki, Dhiren Mistry, Krunal Pandya, Abhijeet
Karambelkar, Shoeb Tai, Lukman Meriwala, Rishi Arothe, Dhruv Patel, Mohit Mongia, Urvil Patel, Ninad Rathwa.
