According to reports from News18, the USA may no longer co-host the 2024 T20 World Cup with the West Indies Cricket Board with ICC stripping them from the said position. The USA had originally qualified for the tournament as a host nation, which would have been a historic achievement for an associate country.

News18 CricketNext has reported that the ICC sources have confirmed that the West Indies will be the sole host of the T20 World Cup 2024.

The reason for this decision is that the USA does not have a properly elected cricketing body or a strong first-class structure, leading to the country being deemed unfit to host the World Cup.

In the report from the media outlet, a source from ICC talked about the issue at hand and have his input on the situation.

The source expressed surprise at the ICC’s initial decision to award the hosting rights to the USA. Additionally, they raised the question of why cricketing governing bodies from Nepal and various African nations were not being considered as potential hosts for future tournaments.

“For jointly hosted World Cups we often contract with the Full Member (FM) as the host who is fully responsible for the delivery of the Event. The FM would then have a staging agreement with the relevant Members to ensure the successful staging of World Cup matches in other countries. In this case, Cricket West Indies have been contracted as World Cup hosts.”

“What I can’t understand is, why is the ICC so bent on “developing” a sport in a country that is the leading first-world nation on the planet and can afford to fend for itself? On top of that, the US neither has an elected body in place nor does it have a decent First Class culture. So what’s the hurry to take the World Cup there? Why can’t the ICC put that much emphasis on developing cricket in Nepal or any of the African nations that truly follow and play the sport? One must ask the ICC to explain their “love” for America,”

According to the report, Ricky Skerritt had played a significant role in pushing for the USA’s nomination as co-host for the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, he is expected to be replaced by Pankaj Khimji from Oman in the ICC nominations committee. Khimji, who is also a member director of the Associate Nations in the ICC, will be taking over Skerritt’s position.
