As per reports, the Indian cricket team might not feature in the upcoming 2022 Asian Games. Cricket as a game is back in Asian Games which will be held in Hangzhou later this year but the most followed cricket nation is unlikely to participate.

India will not be participating in the 2022 Asian Games due to their prior bilateral commitments. The men’s team might also not participate in the event as they do not want to risk an injury ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year.

“As far as the Asian Games in Hangzhou is concerned, a final decision on whether to send both men’s and women’s teams will be taken later and based on our existing commitments,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah told Reuters.

In another update, the Indian women’s team might also not participate in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in July-August. They will be touring England during that time where they are scheduled to play three one-dayers and as many T20Is.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has further said that the BCCI wants to honour bilateral commitments against teams, especially in the post-covid scenario.

“The BCCI has always stood by member boards and helped them in these difficult times. The board firmly believes in honouring its bilateral commitments.

“We are committed to our fans here in India and it is absolutely important that we safeguard our home season. The FTP that has been created needs to be adhered to,” he said, referring to the game’s Future Tours Programme calendar.

The unwillingness of the BCCI was seen as a major problem ahead of the 2022 Asian Games. After BCCI’s withdrawal, the ICC will now push for a case of cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The same was confirmed by Jay Shah as well.

“The BCCI and ICC are on the same page on this and agree that the inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is good for the growth of the game,” added Shah.
