Scoring a hundred is the most special individual achievement for any batsman. Scoring a century in a T20 game is another daunting task, as it involves the pressure of a limited number of balls, run rate, and strike rate.

The IPL witnessed its maiden century in its first-ever game in 2008, courtesy of a whirlwind knock by Brendon McCullum. Since then, heavyweights from different teams have broken and scored the century records.

Let’s see which team has the most centuries in the tournament’s history.

10. Kolkata Knight Riders-1 Century (1 player)

Brendon McCullum lit up the IPL in the tournament’s first match in 2008. Playing for Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, McCullum smashed a thunderous hundred, scoring an unbeaten 158* off 73 balls, which included 13 sixes and 10 fours.

Sadly, for KKR, there has never been another three-figure score achieved by any Kolkata player after McCullum – even after having two dominating title-winning seasons.

9. Deccan Chargers – 2 Centuries (2 players)

Deccan Chargers had faced the highs and lows of the IPL. Chargers held the wooden spoon in the first season. However, they went on to win the second season under the leadership of Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist.

They qualified for the semis in 2010 and ended up in the group stage for the next couple of seasons before being ousted from the tournament.

Chargers have two centurions to their name – Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds. Gilchrist notches up his ton in a 10-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in 2008. Chasing 155, the left-hander scored 109* off 47 balls.

Andrew Symonds, in the same season, scored his first hundred in the IPL. The right-hander smashed the Rajasthan Royals bowlers for a 117* from 53 balls, taking his team towards a mammoth score of 214/5, which was eventually chased down by the Royals.

8. Rising Pune Supergiant- 2 centuries (2 players)

The now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant(s) has two centurions. The overseas English-Aussie duo of Steve Smith and Ben Stokes each have a century to their name which they recorded while playing for the Pune franchise, both against another defunct team- Gujarat Lions.

Steve Smith, in 2016, scored a rapid inning of 101 runs in 54 balls, which included 8 fours and five sixes. However, Smith’s century went in vain as Gujarat chased down the target of 196 on the last ball of the match.

On the other hand, Ben Stokes recorded his century for RPS in the winning cause. Chasing 162, after four early wickets, Stokes smashed an unbeaten 103 from 63 balls to take RPS home safely.

7. Sunrisers Hyderabad- 3 centuries (2 players)

Arguably, the most aggressive opening batting combination in the IPL history, David Warner and Jonny Bairstow are the only two players to score centuries for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Warner, who led SRH to its maiden title in 2016, notches up his maiden century for Hyderbad in 2017 against KKR. The left-hander scored 126 off 59 balls to lead SRH to a match-winning total of 209.

In 2019, Warner and Bairstow combined to torment the RCB bowlers as both the openers registered three-figure scores. Bairstow hit his maiden IPL ton scoring 114 off 56 balls. At the other end, Warner scored 100 off 55 balls. Both batters combined smacked 12 sixes and 17 fours. SRH won the game by a mammoth 118 runs.

The four-time champions have four IPL centurions to date. In the inaugural season, Sanath Jayasuriya was in a rampant form as he became the first Mumbai Indians [MI] batsman to score a century. The Sri Lankan scored a match-winning 114* from 48 balls with the help of 11 sixes in a run-chase against the Chennai Super Kings.

God of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar registered his maiden IPL ton against the now-defunct, Gujarat Lions, albeit in a loss. The opener batted through the entire inning scoring 100* from 66 balls. Gujarat chased it down with an over to spare.

Rohit Sharma continued his love affair with the Eden Gardens as the right-hander scored 109* off 60 balls, against KKR in 2012. Lendl Simmons became the fourth player for MI to score an IPL ton. He did it against Kings XI Punjab, in Mohali in 2014. Chasing 157, the opener scored 100 from 61 balls, including 14 fours and a couple of sixes.

The inaugural champions of the IPL have four players who have combines scored six centuries. Yusuf Pathan in 2010 scintillated the world with the then fastest IPL ton, off 37 balls he scored 100 runs with the help of nine fours and eight sixes.

Ajinkya Rahane in 2012 scored his maiden IPL century against RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The opener scored 103 off 60 balls to guide the Royals to a match winnings total of 195. In 2019, Rahane, coming out of captaincy duties, made a 105* from 63 balls versus Delhi Capitals.

Sanju Samson, the young sensation for the Royals, has also smashed ton in the IPL. He had a prolific 2019 season where he made a ton full of classy shots. He scored 102* off 55 balls including 10 fours and 4 breathtaking sixes against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Michael Hussey in 2008, became CSK’s first centurion – on the second day of the IPL – when he helped CSK reach a massive score of 240 against Kings XI Punaj by scoring 116 off 54 balls. Murli Vijay, who rose as a star for CSK, scored two hundreds for the yellow army.

In 2010 verses, Rajasthan Royals he scored 127, which is still the highest score by any CSK player, and then another century knock of 113 runs against Delhi Daredevils in 2012.

Suresh Raina, Chennai’s backbone and regarded as Mr.IPL, also has an IPL century to his name which he registered in 2013 against Kings XI Punjab in Chennai. An innnigs of 100 runs off 53 balls by the left-hander included seven fours and six sixes. Raina has a hundred in the Champions League final too.

Shane Watson holds the record of third joint-most centuries in the IPL. He has four centuries- two each with Rajasthan and Chennai. For CSK, he scored both the centuries in the 2018 season- the second of which was in the final against SRH.

It was one of the most memorable tons – and only the second century in an IPL final – when the Aussie all-rounder carted the SRH bowling attack to all parts of the Wankhede stadium for a 117*, handing CSK to their third title. Earlier in the season, he took the attack to his former team, Rajasthan Royals for an innings of 106 off 57 balls.

Ambati Rayudu and Brendon McCullum have scores of 100* each as well for CSK, which they made in 2018 and 2015, respectively.

Delhi Capitals, earlier Delhi Daredevils, haven’t won any trophy in the first 12 seasons, however, they still have flashes of brilliance in individual performances. AB de Villiers became the first Delhi player to reach the landmark figure in 2009 in Durban against CSK. Next year, David Warner scored his maiden hundred against KKR in Delhi.

Virender Sehwag became the first Indian player from the Delhi franchise to notch up a three-figure mark in 2011 against Deccan Chargers. Against the same opposition, David Warner scored his second ton for Delhi.

Another set of the overseas player in Kevin Pietersen and Quinton de Kock made hundreds for Delhi in 2012 and 2016 respectively. Former Delhi wicketkeeper, Sanju Samson notched up his maiden IPL ton in 2017 in Pune, which is a relatively larger stadium compared to Delhi.

Rishabh Pant currently holds the record of the highest score by a Delhi player in the IPL. The left-hander played destructive innings of 128* off 63 balls against SRH in 2018. Shikhar Dhawan has hit his purple patch this season and has scored back-to-back centuries as he becomes the first player to do so in the IPL history.

2. Kings XI Punjab- 13 centuries (11 players)

With just one appearance in the final and no trophies, Kings XI Punjab have flattered to deceive for many years. However, they have had batters who, on their day, can win the game single-handedly. Their current skipper, KL Rahul, has two IPL centuries. Rahul scored his maiden IPL ton in 2019 against MI and in 2020 against his former team RCB.

Shaun Marsh, Punjab’s lone warrior in the earlier seasons, was first KXIP player to score a hundred in 2008. Then overseas stars like Mahela Jayawardene, Adam Gilchrist and David Miller recorded their three-figure landmarks in 2010, 2011 and 2013, respectively. One season wonders, Paul Valthaty made his name with a stylish hundred in 2011 against the Super Kings.

On the back of Virender Sehwag’s exhilarating hundred against Chennai in the play-off, Punjab reached their maiden IPL final. In the final Wriddhiman Saha scored his maiden IPL ton, however, KKR won the final by three wickets.

Former Protea opener, Hashim Amla, known for his class and technique, displayed his extra gear for Punjab in 2017, recording two hundred in a single season. In 2020, Mayank Agarwal is the latest entrant to this catalogue, as the opener made a splendid hundred against the Royals in Sharjah.

Royal Challengers Bangalore has always boasted of a strong, probably, the most devastating batting lineup in the IPL. In the early years, Manish Pandey became the first Indian batsman to score a century in the IPL in 2009.

Then the trio of Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and Ab de Villiers have dominated the batting charts in the IPL. Captain Kohli had an unbelievable season in 2016 where rocked up four centuries in a single season.

He added another ton in 2019 at the Eden Gardens. Chris Gayle took IPL by storm in 2011, and the left-hander has a total of five centuries for RCB – including the highest score of 175* in 2013.

AB de Villiers, the South African superstar also has a couple of centuries in the IPL for RCB which he scored in 2015 against Mumbai and in 2016 against Gujarat.
