He can bowl, he can bowl for sure, he can make you dance to his tunes with his truckload of variations, but in case you were wondering if he can bat, Ravichandran Ashwin once again reminded everyone there is a reason why he has four Test hundreds against the name.

In a Test match where all the discussions have been centered around what the pitch is doing or rather what it can do; in a Test match where all the talks have been around the pitch rather than on the players performing on it; Ravichandran Ashwin just proved to everyone that ‘Listen! Stop all this talk of the pitch being bad for Test cricket or that it is a bunsen burner or that it is a graveyard for batsmen or that you one just needs to turn up and land the ball and it will have the batsman’s written on it sooner rather than later, just watch me and learn how to bat’

Geeeez! Is there anything that this champion cricketer cannot do at the moment? Is there anything that is beyond the realms of reality for this once in a generation cricketer to achieve? Thousands of boisterous fans at the Chepauk and millions watching at home were left wondering the same as they saw Ashwin smash his 5th Test hundred.

It was an innings full of character, resilience, grit, patience, and the most delightful strokeplay that one will ever see. On a day that started with a flurry of wickets and anticipation of watching Ashwin weave his magic with the ball again, every cricket fan was treated by a masterclass in how to bat on a raging turner by the off-spin all-rounder.

Ashwin came to bat after India had lost as many as five wickets in the first hour of the morning session and the off-spinner made his intentions pretty clear as he dished out a masterclass in sweeping a cricket ball.

Whether it was the conventional sweep or the reverse-sweep, the Tamil Nadu cricketer literally overshadowed his more celebrated teammate in Virat Kohli at the other end. His 96-run-stand with Virat just knocked the stuffing out of the English bowling unit.

Virat was eventually dismissed for 62 but Ashwin held the fort and batted along with the tail to ensure that he brought up his 5th Test ton. This is the 3rd instance where Ashwin has scored a hundred and has taken a five-wicket haul in the same Test and it’s only Ian Botham (5) who has done it more than him.
