Kolkata Knight Riders have indeed come into this auction with a point to prove. They roped in the English limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan to start with. Later, they swooped in at the very last moment to snap the Australian quick bowler Pat Cummins for INR 15.50 crores. Their latest pick in the auction was Varun Chakravarthy for a whopping INR 4.00 crores. Royal Challengers Bangalore also showed an interest initially; however, they bowed out, looking at the price rocketing.
The mystery spinner was one of the two expensive players in the previous auction, having gone for INR 8.4 crores. It was Kings XI Punjab who went in and secured him the last time. However, he fell flat, having played just the one game and picking up just the one wicket. Varun’s selection came on the back of his impact in the Tamil Nadu Premier League in which his economy rate was one of the best. Nevertheless, little did anyone imagine that he would go on to become the costliest.

To go after him was a surprise decision by the Kolkata Knight Riders since he failed to make any noteworthy contribution even in just the one match he featured in. However, there have been instances previously where the fortunes of a player have turned around drastically after jumping from one franchise to another.
