India skipper Virat Kohli has explained the reason behind not sending Sanju Samson to bat alongside KL Rahul in the super over in the fourth T20I against New Zealand. For the second game in a row in the ongoing series, the match was decided by the super over.
Once again, New Zealand slipped from a strong position to let the game go to super over. Chasing 166, New Zealand needed only seven runs with well set Tim Seifert and Ross Taylor batting. But somehow, New Zealand failed to score the required runs.
They lost four wickets in the over and failed to score 2 runs off the final ball. On the first ball of the final over, Taylor was dismissed. Daryl Mitchell then hit a four to bring the equation down to 3 from final four balls before Seifert was run out. Mitchell was then out on the fifth ball while Mitchell Santner was out on the final ball when he tried to take a non-existent double.

In the super over, New Zealand scored 13 for 1. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul then did the required job. Rahul started the super over in fine fashion by dispatching Tim Southee for a six and a four to all but seal the game. He was out on the third ball but Virat Kohli ensured that India cross the line without any further hiccup.
After the game, Virat Kohli explained the reason behind not sending Sanju Samson to bat at the start of the super over. Sanju Samson did come out to bat in the super over when Rahul was dismissed but didn’t face any ball. Kohli explained that he decided against sending Samson to bat because of the batsman’s lack of experience.
“Initially Sanju and KL were supposed to go, but I went in because I was more experienced. I haven’t been part of a super-over for too long but happy to have got my team across,” said Virat Kohli.
