Team India have finally lost a Test match. Since the inception of the ICC World Test Championship last year, Virat Kohli and his boys have lost the first game after winning seven consecutive games on the trot.

The number 1 Test team in the world has been beaten by none other than the Kiwis. The BlackCaps beat India by a giant margin 0f 10 wickets and handed them their first-ever defeat in the format since last year.

India started the New Zealand tour on a high. They clean swept the Kiwis 5-0 in the T20 series becoming the first team to do so in the history of the sport. But, ever since then, they seem to have lost the plot.

The Kiwis avenged their T20 series defeat in style as they clean swept India in the ODIs by a margin of 3-0. Going into the Test series, India knew that they had to win both the games as to emerge victorious at the end of the tour, but a dismal batting display from the Men in Blue continued their winless streak.

Virat Kohli Defends India’s Performance In The 1st Test

“Some people might want it to be the end of the world but it’s not. For us, it’s a game of cricket we lost and we move on and keep our heads high,” Kohli said. He added, “We understand that we need to play well to win, also at home. There’s no cakewalk at international level as teams will come and beat you. You accept it and that defines our character as a side.”

“That’s why we have been able to play this kind of cricket. If we would have paid attention to the outside chatter, we would again be at No. 7 or 8 in the rankings. We don’t really bother about what people are saying on the outside,” the skipper said. “One defeat can’t make a team, which has been winning games of Test cricket, bad overnight,” he added.

The self-belief is intact and Kohli was confident the team would come back stronger in the second Test, to be held in Christchurch in four days time.
