Team India registered a sensational victory in the opening ODI against England at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham to go 1-0 up in the 3 match series. It was a thoroughly professional performance by the Men in Blue in all 3 departments of the game. The win was largely built around two brilliant individual performances by Kuldeep Yadav and Rohit Sharma.

Kuldeep became the first left-arm spinner to bag a 5 wicket haul in English conditions. It was a superlative performance by the youngster. For the 2nd time in the tour, Kuldeep bamboozled the English batting line-up with his exceptional variations. England failed to read him properly from the hand and ended up giving their wickets to ordinary shots.

Kuldeep’s heroics

Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow shared a 73 runs stand for the opening wicket in just 10.2 overs. However, it was Kuldeep who started the slide for the English team. He bagged 3 quick wickets to reduce the hosts to 82/3 from 73/. Kuldeep bowled quite exceptionally and was at his best even in the 2nd spell. He came back to bag the wickets of Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and David Willey. England eventually managed to score just 268 which was never going to be enough at Trent Bridge.

India began quite brilliantly with openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan smashing some exquisite shots. It was Rohit who batted through the innings and remained unbeaten on a brilliant 137 of 114 deliveries. He looked in complete command of proceedings and smashed 15 fours and 4 sixes during his knock.

He shared a huge partnership with captain Virat Kohli who also contributed with a brilliant 75. Virat played some gorgeous shots but was eventually dismissed by Adil Rashid. It was a thoroughly entertaining performance by India.

Virender Sehwag congratulates Kuldeep and Rohit
