Virender Sehwag would be the same person even if he scores 300 or gets out for a duck, Simon Taufel once said. Sehwag would start off a innings with a boundary and hit a six to reach his century, it hardly mattered to him. He was fearless in his approach, which brought out the best within him, and benefited the teams he played for.

Sehwag was the first India cricketer to score a triple century in Test cricket and went on to register around 8500 runs at an average of 49.34 in the format. He had notched up 23 centuries and 32 half-centuries in the format. But former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif reckons he could have easily scored 10,000 runs in the longest format had he not played under the shadow of greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

Virender Sehwag’s Record Speaks For Him: Rashid Latif

Rashid Latif believes if Sehwag played for another country he would have easily scored over 10000 runs. He was an impact player and opponents were wary of his potential. It was the big names who kept him under shadow, Latif added.

“Sehwag’s record speaks for him. He has 8 thousand plus runs in Test cricket. He is someone who has always remained under the shadows of other players. He played with Sachin, played with Rahul and remained under their shadow. If he was playing for any other country then he would’ve easily crossed 10 thousand runs, only one and a half thousand runs were remaining.

“Maybe his team had bigger names, bigger players but opponents were always wary of the impact that Sehwag could have on a game,” Rashid Latif said.

Sehwag also had an average of around 35 in the ODIs and was instrumental in getting the national team off to a good start on quite a few occasions. He, however, could not contribute much in the shortest format before his retirement.
