Kolkata Knight Riders suffered their second consecutive loss and fourth in IPL 2020 as Mumbai Indians beat them by eight wickets in Abu Dhabi. Following their comprehensive defeat, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has fired a warning to the two-time champions and in particular, Shubman Gill, who has failed to get the runs consistently. Virender Sehwag reckons that the next chance should be a make or break situation for Shubman Gill.

Shubman Gill entered IPL 2020 with a reputation of undergoing a great season and being one of the best young players in the nation. The 20-year old faced promotion to the top-order in 2019 and performed considerably well as KKR decided to keep him there. Nevertheless, in eight matches so far, Gill has only two half-centuries and the intent has been missing.

Shubman Gill scored only 21 runs from 23 deliveries before Rahul Chahar dismissed him. In IPL 2020, he has a strike rate of only 116.53, which is exceptionally low in T20s. Hours before the clash against Mumbai Indians, Dinesh Karthik stepped down from the captaincy position as Eoin Morgan took charge. Despite the World Cup-winning captain being at the helm, it did not make much difference as KKR sustained an eight-wicket hammering from the defending champions.

Virender Sehwag highlighted that with the plethora of opportunities that Shubhman Gill has had, he needs to play in a more attacking manner. If otherwise, the 41-year old believes that someone else should open ahead of him, who could lay a solid foundation for the middle-order to build on the same.

Gill has had many opportunities and now he needs to play in a more attacking manner in the powerplays. If he can’t do that, bring him down in the batting order and send someone else up. If you are to win, the start needs to be good. If the foundation is not laid properly, you can’t build a solid innings on it,” Sehwag stated as quoted by Times Now.
