Former Pakistan captain and present bowling coach Waqar Younis has vowed to step down if he fails to achieve the targets set by him. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) claimed that he himself would review his performance as a bowling mentor after one year. Younis is currently on a three-year contract with his national team.

The retired pace bowler has served as the coach for the men in green for several occasions. The PCB first appointed him in 2006 as the bowling coach. Before taking the position of head coach in 2010, the 48-year old joined them as the bowling coach again. In August 2011, he put down his papers, but in 2014, Waqar would again rejoin the staff in May 2014. In April 2016, he resigned from the spot before joining the ranks after the 2019 World Cup for the fourth time.

The Punjab-born speedster mentioned that he would be looking into his performance to see where he stands. Waqar made it clear he would no longer hold onto the position if he is not able to get the job done. Furthermore, the veteran specifically said that he wants to achieve the target to prepare a settled unit of pace attack for both white and red-ball cricket.

“I will be reviewing myself after a year and let me make it clear, if I feel I am not good enough for the job and I am not doing justice to it I will resign and leave myself. It is not as if because I have a three-year contract I will hang around. I have some set targets in mind and I want to help and groom the young fast bowlers. The way I look at it my plan is prepare a settled bowling attack for test cricket and keep a rotation policy for the white ball formats. Where we adopt a horses for courses policy. Pick those who are in form for us.” Younis said as quoted by India Today.

The former prolific wicket-taker is also awed by the pool of exciting talent of fast bowlers including the likes of Shaheen Shah, Naseem Shah, and Mohammad Hasnain. However, he was vary of not to overlook the pond of speedsters in the domestic circuit.

“We have got some exciting young fast bowlers like Shaheen Shah, Naseem Shah, Muhammad Hasnain and we are looking at more talent. That does not mean I will ignore those who had done well in domestic cricket.” he stated further.
