The way Jonny Bairstow was going in the ongoing second England vs India Test, only a moment of brilliance would have sent him back to the stands. Well, the moment was provided by Dinesh Karthik as he took a stunner to dismiss the right-hander. As a result, Bairstow also fell short of a well deserved century by just seven runs.

Bairstow came to the crease when England were in a spot of bother. India had reduced the hosts to 89 for 4 after being bundled out for just 107 in the first innings. However, Bairstow along with Buttler and Chris Woakes batted England to a position of strength. He first stopped the rot for a while by adding 42 runs off just 39 balls with Buttler. The keeper-batsman was then joined by Woakes in the middle as the duo sent India on a leather hunt.

They stitched together the first 50-run stand in the game before reaching their individual fifties. They took the score past the 200-run mark and the lead beyond 100. At tea, England were 230 for 5. The duo started the third session in the same manner as Woakes reached his century off 129 balls.

Bairstow also looked set to join Woakes in the century club before his innings was cut short by a brilliant grab from Karthik behind the stumps. Hardik Pandya bowled a slightly fuller than a good length outside off, inviting Bairstow to go for the drive. And the batsman duly delivered. However, it brought about his downfall as he edged the ball behind the stumps where Karthik took a stunner.

Here is a clip of that stunner:
