Gone are those days when batsman in the game of cricket used to play the textbook shots. The game has evolved like any other over the years. During the course, few players came up with a few innovative strokes to make the cricket fanatics go wonder at them. In the latest, Glenn Philips came up with yet another outrageous shot, which left the fans in awe of him.

The incident took place during the match between Auckland and Otago in the Ford Trophy on Wednesday. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Auckland lost Colin Munro for a cheap score. However, the right-handed opening batsman Martin Guptill and the wicketkeeper-batsman Glenn Philips scored scintillating centuries to have Otago chasing the ball more often than not.

Glenn Philips scored 156 runs for Auckland:

During the course, Glenn Philips played a switch-hit pull shot off Matthew Bacon, which went all the way for six runs. Philips, who was already settled in the middle tried to reverse-scoop the ball, however, the bowler was smart enough to shorten his length and bowl it into the batsman’s rib cage, but Glenn Philips was capable enough in connecting the ball.

Glenn Philips went on to smash 156 runs that include 16 fours and three sixes. On the other hand, Martin Guptill registered 117-run knock with the help of 7 boundaries and three sixes. The duo stitched 235-run partnership for the second wicket to push Auckland to 310 runs on the board.

Chasing a 311-run target, Otago were bundled out for 213 in 40.2 overs. Coming in to bat at No. 3 in the first over itself, Neil Broom top-scored for Otago with 67 (84) that included four fours and two sixes. Nathan G Smith fought hard in the death overs, but unfortunately, couldn’t take his side over the ropes.

Apart from Neil Broom’s 67 and Smith’s 43, none of the batsmen looked comfortable in the middle. In the end, Auckland won the game with a comfortable margin of 97 runs. For Auckland, Ben Lister, Sean Solia and William were the picks of the bowlers with two wickets each.
