Despite not playing in the ongoing second Test between England and South Africa in Cape Town, Jonny Bairstow has been all over the news albeit for reasons he would not have wanted. The England star was stitched up by South Africa’s host broadcaster during a lull in play on day three of the game.

With England busy in building a big lead after taking a handy 46-run lead in the first innings, Jonny Bairstow decided to join hands with the official broadcasters in having some fan. The wicketkeeper-batsman was shown in the stands looking through binoculars on Sunday.

England were 158 for 2 when the SuperSport TV production team decided to pull a prank on Jonny Bairstow. In a surprising scene, the broadcast showed Jonny Bairstow looking out from the team’s balcony, before repeatedly cutting to female fans in the crowd.

What made things even more unpleasant and worse was the comment from one of the commentators, who said: “What’s he looking at, Jonny Bairstow?” and it was followed by fits of laughter in the background. Unsurprisingly, the footage went viral after it was shared on Twitter by BBC radio host Greg James.

The prank was clearly designed to stitch up Jonny Bairstow and make it look like he was checking out the women. And unsurprisingly, the incident drew mixed reactions. While there were many who saw the funny side of the prank, there were also some who were not impressed by it at all.

While England pace spearhead James Anderson was in stitches after seeing the clip of the prank on Twitter, there were many who slammed the broadcasters for the same.

“TV director is a disgrace it’s not beautiful or clever,” wrote one user named Lorna Leach.

“It’s embarrassing and objectifying women. Women who had every right to be at the test to enjoy the game not be ‘hot’ enough for the director and camera crew to pick them out,” she added.
