Kings XI Punjab as well as their opener KL Rahul were looking set to end their innings on a disappointing note in the ongoing game against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Put in to bat first, KL Rahul and Chris Gayle started strongly and added 50 runs in the powerplay. The two soon went on to score their fifties and were showing no signs of slowing down. The century stand was up soon before Jason Behrendorff sent back Gayle for 63.

Gayle’s dismissal allowed Mumbai Indians to claw their way back into the game and they did by putting a brake on the scoring-rate. Kings XI Punjab, who were looking set to post well in excess of 200, were now even struggling to put up 180.  At the end of the 18th over, Kings XI were reeling at 159 for 3.  However, KL Rahul took the onus on himself to guide his team to a good total and duly delivered.

In the 19th over of the innings, he hit his Indian teammate Hardik Pandya for three sixes and a four on consecutive deliveries to race away to 92 from 69 in a space of an over. He then reached his first century of the IPL with a double off Jasprit Bumrah in the final over as Kings XI ended on a daunting 197 for 4.

Speaking after the inning, Rahul revealed the batting plans.

“I…. am…lost…for breath (gasps). The way Chris and me started, we had to get to 200 but we lost our way a bit in the middle. Wasn’t easy to start with, had to take our time and then cash in. For the first six overs, the plan was to just play cricketing shots without trying too hard. After that, whoever has looked good will take charge. More often than not, it’s Chris because if he bats 12-13 overs, he basically puts us in a really good position. I delayed going after the bowling for a couple of overs as we lost some momentum after Chris got out,” KL Rahul said after his knock.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
