South Africa’s hope of winning the ongoing Test series against England has been dealt a big blow with ICC banning Kagiso Rabada from the fourth and final Test. The Proteas pace spearhead has been banned for his animated send-off to England captain Joe Root on day one of the ongoing third Test in Port Elizabeth. The ICC, on Friday, announced that the right-arm pacer has been docked 15 percent of his match fee in addition to accumulating a demerit point.

Kagiso Rabada has now four demerit points and thus according to rules, he will miss the upcoming Test in Johannesburg. The former world number one Test bowler was found to have violated Article 2.5 of the code, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his or her dismissal during an international match”.

Two of his three previous demerit points came in the bad-tempered 2018 Test series against Australia, which culminated in the Australia ball-tampering scandal. The third resulted from his celebration on dismissing India’s Shikhar Dhawan earlier the same year. This is also the second time that Kagiso Rabada has been banned for an accumulation of demerit points. He was banned for the first time during South Africa’s tour of England in 2017, when he missed the second Test at Trent Bridge.

Here are a couple of clips showing the incident that led to his ban:

Talking about the match, England were slightly ahead at the end of day one. An unbroken stand of 76 between Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope gave the visitors a slight edge over the hosts as they finished the day on a fine 224 for 4. England were in a spot of bother after losing three wickets for 35 runs to slip to 148 for 4 before Pope and Stokes steadied the ship.
