Before the start of the ongoing T20I series against West Indies, India captain Virat Kohli had categorically asked the fans not to chant MS Dhoni’s name whenever Rishabh Pant failed to deliver. The youngster has been under immense pressure in recent weeks and the fans have only made things tougher for him. Every time he commits a mistake on the field, the fans make sure to remind of Dhoni.

Pant’s performance since the World Cup has left a lot to be desired. The wicketkeeper-batsman has struggled to do well with both bat and gloves. The selectors and the team-management have made it clear that they will back Pant to the hilt but fans have decided otherwise. The fans are seemingly running out of patience with the under-performing starlet and Kohli urged them to change their stance.

“We certainly believe in Rishabh’s ability. But I think it’s a collective responsibility of everyone around as well to give that player some space to do well. If he misses a chance, people can’t shout MS’ (Dhoni) name in the stadium as well. It’s not respectful because no player would like that to happen. You are playing in your own country and you should get support rather than always thinking what mistake this guy is gonna make. No one wants to be in that position,” Kohli had said.

Kohli angry:

Despite Virat Kohli’s request, the crowd in Thiruvananthapuram made sure to make Pant feel bad about his place in the team by chanting the names of MS Dhoni during the second T20I. Kohli was absolutely furious with the turn of events and did not shy away from expressing his displeasure to the crowd. The incident took place in the 5th over of the match.

On the fourth ball of the over, Pant failed to hold on to an edge from Evin Lewis. He had caught the ball but it popped out of his hand after he landed on the ground. And as soon as that happened, the crowd started chanting Dhoni’s name, much to Kohli’s surprise. Kohli then decided to have a few words with the fans as he turned back and expressed his displeasure over the reaction.

West Indies, meanwhile, beat India by eight wickets to draw level in the three-match series. The third and final game will take place in Mumbai on December 11.
