Sarfaraz Ahmed

Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Pakistan know that they are very much out of the contention for a semifinal spot now. The reigning Champions Trophy-holders go into their final league game against Bangladesh knowing that they do not have any realistic chance of progressing ahead. Pakistan, however, have a mathematical chance to stay alive in the competition.

At present, New Zealand are fourth with 11 points at the end of their nine group games. Fifth-place Pakistan can draw level with the Black Caps on points if they beat Bangladesh. However, Sarfaraz Ahmed & Co. need to win by 300-plus runs to advance. No team in the history of ODIs has ever managed to pull off this feat.

Pakistan could see even those remote hopes end without a ball being bowled if it loses the toss and Bangladesh chooses to bat, eliminating any chance for Pakistan to radically improve its net run-rate. The net run-rate is taken into consideration after teams with same number of points end up with same number of wins.  If Pakistan win against Bangladesh, they will have five victories like New Zealand, which have a far superior net run-rate.

But while even the die-hard Pakistan fans have given up their hopes, Sarfaraz Ahmed has not. The Pakistan skipper has boldly claimed that his team would try to score 500 against Bangladesh and would hope for a miracle to happen. Speaking on the eve of the clash, the wicketkeeper-batsman said, the team would give its best and try to score 500.

Here is a clip of Sarfaraz Ahmed’s bold statement:

Meanwhile, Australia, India and England have already sealed their spot in the last four of the competition. Australia are currently at the top of the points table and would finish there if they win their final game. India, on the other hand, can finish second even if they lose their final game. England will finish third while New Zealand look set to be the fourth-placed side.
