You Were in Your Nappies, When I Made my Test Debut: Parthiv Patel to Steve Waugh's Son
Wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel revealed that he hilariously used the same lines that Steve Waugh told him while bumping into his son, Austin, at the Sydney Test of 2019. While the Gujarat star is no more a part of the Test team, he was part of the squad that registered the historic series win in 2018-19 season.
India won the four-match series 2-1 to register their first-ever series win on Australian soil. As far as Parthiv Patel is concerned, he did not play a single game as India preferred Rishabh Pant. However, the absence of action did not stop the senior wicketkeeper-batsman from having some fun at the expense of Waugh’s son.
During the fourth Test in Sydney, the 35-year saw Austin Waugh, one of the four substitute fielders for Australia during the match. And it was enough for Parthiv Patel to recall the famous comment from Waugh for him during the 2003-04 series.
Waugh was playing his final Test when Patel tried to sledge him. Waugh famously said to Patel: “Show a bit of respect, you were in nappies when I played my first Test match”.
Around 15 years later, Patel saw an opportunity and walked up to Austin Waugh to give it back in the same coin. “I didn’t bump into Steve Waugh, but I did bump into his son, during the Test match in Sydney in 2018-19. He was one of the substitute fielders for Australia. I went up to him and said: “You were in your nappies, when I made my Test debut” (laughs),” recalled Parthiv Patel on the YouTube show called Cow Corner Chronicles.
“I told him to pass my regards to his dad (Steve Waugh) and just say those words back to him,” he added.
