The ICC Cricket World Cup for ODIs has been the biggest of stages in cricket so far for any batsmen and it has been held every four years between the top cricketing nations in the world. Every cricketer dreams of winning the WorldCup for his side and becoming the hero of the nation as the tournament is watched all around the globe.

It is not easy to perform consistently in Worldcups with the pressure of the crowd and the responsibility for the whole nation on the shoulders of the players. Some batsmen have stepped up to the occasion on crunch times and have cherished batting in Worldcup. Here are five batsmen with the highest average in the ODI Worldcup with a minimum of 500 runs.

Viv Richards holds the fifth position in the list of batsmen with the highest average in 50 over World cups and he has played 23 matches in the World cup so far scoring 1013 runs at an average of 63.31. His strike rate has been 85.0 and has scored three centuries and five half-centuries in his World cup career.

Viv Richards is one of the all-time greats of the game and he has had a phenomenal career for West Indies. His highest score of 181 came against Sri Lanka in the 1987 World Cup and he is known for demolishing the bowling attacks without even wearing a helmet.

Micheal Clarke led the Australia team to a famous victory in the 2015 World Cup and he announced his retirement after that. The right-hander has been part of three world cups for his nation and he won his first WorldCup in 2007 too as a youngster. Clarke holds the fourth position in the list of batsmen with the highest average in World cups.

Clarke has played 25 matches in World cups scoring 888 runs at an average of 63.42. He hasn’t scored a century but has scored eight fifties in the tournament with the highest score of 93 not out. He enjoyed a lot of success in Test and ODI cricket in the last decade.

AB De Villiers was one of the best batsmen in the modern era and he played three World cups for South Africa from 2007 to 2015. De Villiers has never been able to win a World cup Trophy and he was very emotional when South Africa lost in the Semi-Finals in the last world cup match in 2015.

He always wanted to win the trophy for his nation and he played 23 matches in World cups scoring 1207 runs at an average of 63.52 and a strike rate of 117.29. He has scored four centuries and six half-centuries in World cups and he holds the third position in the list of batsmen with the highest average in World cups.

Rohit Sharma has played just the two World cups so far in 2015 and 2019 and he still has a lot of cricket left in him. The 34-year-old had a phenomenal 2019 Worldcup and finished as the top run-scorer of the tournament. He has played 17 matches in the Worldcup so far scoring 952 runs at an average of 65.20.

The Indian vice-captain in limited-overs matches has equaled the record for the most number of centuries in World cups with six to his name alongside Sachin Tendulkar. He has also hit three half-centuries in the tournament with the highest score of 140 and holds the second position in the list of batsmen with the highest average in World cups.

Andrew Symonds holds the number one position in the list of batsmen with the highest average in Worldcup. The former Australian middle-order batsmen have been part of two Worldcup and both times, his side has gone on tow in the trophy in 2003 and 2007.

Symonds has played 18 matches in Worldcups scoring 515 runs at an average of 103. He was dismissed just five times out of the 13 innings he played and he hit one century and 3 half-centuries in world cups with the highest score of an unbeaten 143. He was one of the destructive finishers for Australia in the middle order in the 2000s.
