ENG vs WI: To Have The Discipline And Approach, It's A Real Example For Everyone Else - Marcus Trescothick On Joe Root
Former England opener and current batting coach, Marcus Trescothick, heaped praise on the skipper, Joe Root after the latter smashed another century on Day 1 of the second Test against the West Indies.
Root followed up his second-innings century from the previous game and brought up his 25th hundred at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. He built a sturdy partnership with Dan Lawrence, who himself made 91 before falling in the final over of the day.
“Great day, really positive day for us. To be in this position, we are very happy where we are. We had a great platform to go from. To put the West Indies bowlers under pressure, it was a great partnership,” Trescothick said.
“To get a hundred last week and repeat it again, it’s superb to watch” – Marcus Trescothick
Root had the best year of his career in 2021, notching up hundreds in Sri Lanka and India. He was the only batter for England who was competitive and consistent throughout. Heading into 2022, the Englishmen were hoping their captain would continue and he has started off on the right note.
“[On Joe Root] To have the discipline and the approach, it’s a real example for everyone else in the side. To get a hundred last week and repeat it again, it’s superb to watch. [Conditions] We expected it to do a bit early, there was spongy bounce throughout the day,” Trescothick added.
England was in trouble early on as they lost Zak Crawley for a duck when the score was on 4. Root combined with Alex Lees to put on 76 for the 2nd wicket before building a 164-run association with Lawrence. The latter fell late in the day due to a rush of adrenaline but will be happy with his contribution.
