Joe Root wants to continue as England’s Test captain despite the Test series loss against West Indies. West Indies won the third and final Test in Grenada to win the series 1-0 after the first two Tests ended in a draw.
The pitches at Antigua and Barbados drew a lot of criticism for being flat and dead. The pitch curator thus dished out a livelier track and England fell prey to it. They were bowled out for 204 and 120 in the two innings with Root scoring a duck in the first innings and just five in the second. Despite failing both as a captain and a batsman, Root insisted that he wants to continue as a Test captain.
I Am Very Passionate About This Team: Joe Root
“I think I’ve made it quite clear how I feel about this team. I’m very passionate. I feel I’ve got the support of the men behind me to take the team forward. That’s not changed at all.”
Root has won just one test match in the last 17 that he led England as captain. However, he said that the team was doing all the things right and the right result is not far away.
“I feel like the group are very much behind me. I know this is a results-based business but it does not feel like we are far away from turning results” Root further added.
The ECB decided to overhaul the whole coaching unit for England’s debatable Ashes series loss to Australia. The board sacked both their managing director Ashley Giles and coach Chris Silverwood, with fellow former Test players Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood taking over on an interim basis.
England next plays a Test series in June against New Zealand. The side is languishing at the bottom of the ICC WTC 2021-23 points table with seven losses and Windies courtesy of this series win has moved up to the seventh position.
