Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has touched upon the subject of India’s number four conundrum with the ICC World Cup 2023 just about to start. He backed Ishan Kishan to be the No.4 for India in the World Cup 2023.
Like the 2019 World Cup, number four is still a subject of debate for the Indian cricket team. With Shreyas Iyer’s long absence due to injury, the spot was open as several batters auditioned for that role.
However, with the return of Shreyas Iyer, that debate seemed to have settled down. However, the former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has now suggested Ishan KIshan’s name in the mix. He was one of the batters who batted in that position in Iyer’s absence. Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson also batted at that number.
Toss Up Between Shreyas Iyer And Ishan Kishan At 4: Danish Kaneria
“It remains to be seen who will be their No. 4. There could be a toss-up between Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. I feel India should go with Ishan Kishan. He is a left-handed batter, and spinners are likely to be on when he walks out to bat. He can be a better choice, especially in the first half” said Kaneria in his latest YouTube video.
Both Kishan and Iyer have scored for India batting at number four. Kishan recently scored 82 against Pakistan batting at four. Iyer, on the other hand, scored a century batting at four scoring 105 runs in the second ODI of the recently concluded three-match series against Australia. In the third ODI, Shreyas Iyer scored another impressive 48.
Iyer however, seems to be winning the race at the moment. The right-hander was India’s leading run-getter in ODIs in 2022 scoring 724 runs in 17 games at an average of 55.69. Most of those runs came at number four. If Iyer bats at four, the rest of the batting line-up is well-settled.
India will begin their World Cup campaign on October 8 against Australia in Chennai. Ahead of that, both of India’s warm-up games were washed out due to rain.
