IND vs AFG: Rohit Sharma Breaks Chris Gayle's Record To Become Leading Six-hitter In International Cricket

India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma, who is regarded as one of the best batters of all time, created history in the 9th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Wednesday, October 11, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

The 36-year-old came out all guns blazing against the Afghanistan National Cricket Team and demolished their bowling unit. He played his natural attacking brand of cricket and entertained the Delhi crowd with his remarkable hitting.

The Hitman smashed the bowlers all over the park and stunned his teammates with some of his shots. Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi tried all his bowling options but no bowler was able to stop Rohit and he completed his fifty in no time. Rohit Sharma completed his half-century off just 30 balls as he hit 7 fours and 2 sixes.

Rohit Sharma Breaks Chris Gayle’s Record

Rohit smashed the Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq for a huge 85-m six over deep square leg on the fifth ball of the 8th over to go past Chris Gayle’s record and become the leading six-hitter in international cricket.

He went past Chris Gayle’s tally of 553 international sixes. The next three batters on the list are Shahid Afridi (476 sixes), Brendon McCullum (398 sixes), and Martin Guptill (383 sixes).

During his innings, Rohit Sharma also became the fastest-ever Indian in the history of World Cups and overall the joint-fastest batter to complete 1000 runs. Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar held the record as he completed 1000 runs in World Cups in 20 innings.

As India completed 100 runs in 71 balls during the run-chase of 273, Rohit Sharma was at 74 runs and he looked set to complete a historic century in the match.

Rohit completed his ton off 63 balls and became the fastest Indian to hit a century in the history of World Cups, breaking the record of legendary Kapil Dev. Also, he now holds the record for most tons in the history of World Cups.
