Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli will have an opportunity to create history in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. Both the stars are part of India’s World Cup squad. The highly-anticipated tournament is scheduled to be played from October 5 to November 19.
Ravichandran Ashwin was initially not a part of the preliminary squad that was announced earlier this month. However, he earned a recall to the ODI after a gap of more than a year when Axar Patel sustained an unfortunate injury during the Asia Cup earlier this month.
Washington Sundar was also in contention to replace Axar but the selectors and the team management eventually went with the experienced Ravichandran Ashwin. It will be his third ODI World Cup. The veteran off-spinner had played in the 2011 and 2015 editions of the competition.
Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli eye historic feat:
Ravichandran Ashwin’s ODI career was pretty much off track as he had played just two ODIs since 2018 before earning the recall. He will now be desperate to prove his critics wrong by justifying the call-up for the ODI World Cup.
Virat Kohli, on the other hand, has been an indispensable part of the ODI team for more than a decade now. One of the best ODI batsmen in the history of the game, the former India skipper would also be looking to play a big role for India and help the team win its third ODI World Cup.
Both Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli have the opportunity to achieve a historic and very rare feat. Both of them have the opportunity to become the only Indian players to win the ODI World Cup twice. No Indian player has managed to achieve the feat so far.
They were a part of the Indian team that won the World Cup in 2011 and will be desperate to replicate that feat again. India, on the other hand, will be looking to become just the second team after Australia to win the ODI World Cup three times.
India squad for ICC World Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.
