Former captain Mohammad Azharuddin believes that Shreyas Iyer should start in India’s playing XI for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Mohammad Azharuddin emphasized that it would be difficult to overlook Shreyas Iyer, who has done enough to seal the place.

Shreyas Iyer returned to India’s ODI squad during the recent Asia Cup 2023 following a prolonged injury layoff. The right-handed batter played two games before picking up a back spasm. He missed the Super Four stage matches and the final of the tournament.

In an interview with PTI, Mohammad Azharuddin lauded Shreyas Iyer‘s positive intent with the bat, saying that he can make a big impact for the Men in Blue.

“Good competition always brings the best out of the players. Shreyas is an exciting player and he really batted well the other day after losing out on games due to his back issues. He is very positive with his intent and looks to score all the time.”

“He can make a big impact in the game. It is very hard to look past him unless you are looking for a left- hander in the middle, then Ishan comes into picture. However, I feel Shreyas has done enough,” Azhar told PTI on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old got out for just three runs in the first ODI of the recently concluded series against Australia. However, Iyer made a stunning comeback in the second ODI, scoring 105 runs off 90 balls in Indore. He scored 48 runs off 43 deliveries in the third game in Rajkot.

Skipper Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli are expected to be India’s top 3 batters in India’s playing XI for their first match against Australia in the upcoming World Cup at home. KL Rahul is set to bat in the middle order at No. 5 and will keep the stumps.

Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer will compete for the remaining spot in the Top 5 in the batting lineup. The Men in Blue will face the Pat Cummins-led team in their first match of the marquee tournament at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 8.
