Watch: Michael Vaughan's Startling Revelation As He Names The "Star" Of The ICC World Cup Final 2023

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan made an interesting observation as he named the Star of the Final of the ICC World Cup 2023 between India and Australia. Australia won the final by six wickets to win their sixth World Cup title.

India was unbeaten in the lead-up to the final in 10 games. They defeated the Kiwis in the semi-final to make the final of the World Cup for the first time in 13 years. However, things did not work out for India as they planned in the finale.

Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first. The decision turned out to be tactical as the Indian found it difficult to bat on a slow pitch. The ball gripped and turned on the surface as the slower deliveries from the pacers were difficult to hit as well.

Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist were part of a discussion panel dissecting India’s loss in the final. The host of the show asked both Gilchrist and Vaughan to pick one name each as the star of the final.

Adam Gilchrist picked first and he named Pat Cummins as the star of the final. He spoke about how Cummins as the captain made all the right calls on a day it mattered most.

“Very honourable mention to Pat Cummins. He said right at the toss. He made a decision to bowl, Maxi when Rohit was pinning the years back. Well, I even thought from the start that it was Edgbaston of 2005. That deep point is fielder when Rohit smoked one out in the first over and gets cut off. So field position was outstanding, a terrific tournament, a terrific match, a terrific leader, bowled like a lion. He’s as close to what I can say is the Man of the Match” said Gilchrist.

The host then turned quickly to know Michael Vaughan’s opinion on the same. The former England skipper on a sarcastic picked umpire Richard Kettleborough as his man of the match.

India historically, lost every ICC World Cup final or semi-final in which Richard Kettleborough was one of the on-field umpires. He was one of the two on-field umpires in this final as well. Richard Illingworth was the other umpire.

“I think you are right T Head was obviously a key candidate. I think you are right Pat Cummins for me. His captaincy was remarkable, that mid-play when he changed the bowler every over to not KL Rahul and Virat Kohli settle and then he comes on and gets Virat Kohli out. My star has to be Richard Kettleborough, the umpire, he has to be. He has a great game. If his finger would have gone up …” Vaughan concluded saying.
