The 24th match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 will have Afghanistan take on Pakistan at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday. Both the teams have begun their campaign on a positive note. Pakistan currently occupies the top spot on the points table in Group 2.
They have been nothing short of the outstanding, be it any department of the game. In the first game against India, Babar Azam and M Rizwan showcased how good can they place on the sluggish tracks of UAE. Both played unbeaten knocks to register a 10-wicket victory over India. The next game against New Zealand saw Pakistan’s depth in the batting line-up. Chasing a 135-run target, Pakistan lost half of their side for just 87 runs in fifteen overs.
However, Shoaib Malik and Asif Ali shared an unbeaten 48-run partnership to help Pakistan chase down the score in 18.4 overs. Asif Ali showed why has Pakistan showed faith in his finishing abilities. He scored an unbeaten 12-ball 27-run knock, while Malik scored 26 off 20 deliveries.
The bowling performances too have been exemplary, to say the least. Shaheen Shah Afridi was outstanding against India, picking 3 big wickets in his four overs. In the last game against New Zealand, Haris Rauf starred with the ball. The Pakistan paceman varied his pace beautiful and bowled at great lengths consistently. He picked four wickets for just 22 runs in his four overs. Hasan proved expensive in both games but it’s unlikely that he would be replaced for the next game.
On the other hand, Afghanistan are coming into this game on the back of a massive 130-run victory over Scotland. They would be keen to extend their winning run ahead of the next game against Pakistan on Friday.
A collective batting effort from the top-four batsmen helped Afghanistan post a formidable 190-run total against Scotland. Hazratullah Zazai (44 off 30) and Mohammad Shahzad (22 off 15) gave the team a brilliant start, while the likes of Gurbaz (46 off 37) and Najibullah (59 off 34) capitalized on that wonderfully.
Scotland made a decent start with the bat until Mujeeb Ur Rahman ran through their top-order. He picked five wickets for just 20 runs in 4 overs. Rashid Khan came after the powerplay and didn’t take long to finish off the tail. He picked 4 wickets for just 9 runs in 2.2 overs. As a result, Scotland were bowled out for a paltry 60-run total.
Both teams have played exceedingly well today. However, how Afghanistan bat against a solid Pakistan’s bowling unit remains to be seen. Pakistan have been outstanding thus far and is likely to register their third consecutive win on Friday.
