Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli will head into the T20 World Cup 2022 with some good form. He found his form in the recently concluded Asia Cup where he scored 275 runs in five games including his maiden T20I century.

He also scored a crucial fifty in the third T20I against Australia in Hyderabad which was a decider. Kohli has been able to get over his rough patch with the bat which stayed for almost three years.

Heading into the T20 World Cup, he still has two more games against South Africa to get form more runs under his belt. In the first T20I, he scored just three off nine balls in India’s 8-wicket win. In this article, we discuss three reasons why Virat Kohli should not have been in India’s T20 World Cup squad had his lean patch continued.

Barring the Asia Cup, Virat Kohli has not scored consistently in recent times. He was not scoring impactful runs for his side. There was a lot of talk regarding his 71st international century and the wait for it was taking a toll on him. His weakness to balls outside off stump was again exposed all over again as Kohli searched for quick runs.

For a batsman of Kohli’s class, he has had severe problems against leg spin in the recent past. Adam Zampa dismissed him in the Australia series once again recently. He was troubled by Adil Rashid whenever India played England in the last couple of years and recently in the Asia Cup Rashid Khan troubled him as well. His long-standing problem is still continuing. With all teams having at least one quality spinner in their ranks in the T20 World Cup, Kohli will be an easy target against leg spin.

Batters like Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Hooda scored runs at number three while Kohli was struggling for form. However, when it was time for the squad to be announced, Iyer was not considered for the main squad. He is a part of the reserves while Hooda was included in the main squad.

There was a lot of talk about Iyer being the better choice than Hooda for the T20 World Cup. Iyer is a part of the reserves and will only get a chance to play if any regular batter gets injured in the mega event.
