The 34th match of the ICC T20 World Cup is slated to be played between Australia and Bangladesh at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday. There is no denying that the match holds a lot more importance to Australia than Bangladesh.
Australia dented their progress of reaching the semis after losing their last game against England. Before that game, Aaron Finch had exhibited solid performance with both bat and ball. As it stands, Australia are currently sitting at number three position on the points table in Group 1 with 2 wins in 3 matches.
England have already qualified for the semi-finals and it remains to be seen as to who will be the second side from the Group 1. Australia are certainly in contention for reaching the semis, however, they need to play exceedingly well in their last two games to make a top-four finish. Australia’s net run rate is a concern and thus they would be aiming to beat Bangladesh by a big margin on Thursday.
Their confidence wouldn’t be too high after suffering an embarrassing defeat against England.
Big names such as David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell etc have all lacked consistently. The top-order has to play well if Australia want to go deep into the tournament. Skipper Aaron Finch is coming into the game on the back of consistent performances. The fans will once again pin their hopes on him to make an impact in the game. The bowling, though, is in quite balance and you don’t expect any chances taking place in that department.
Facing them are Bangladesh, who are languishing at the bottom of the points table with 4 losses in 4 games. Bangladesh have had a poor outing in the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup. It won’t be wrong to say that the team lacked collective performances with both bat and ball.
The overdependence on Shakib Al Hasan has been a major reason behind the downfall. Senior players such as Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim failed to hit the straps. In the last game against South Africa, Mushfiqur got out on a duck, while the skipper made 3 off 9 deliveries.
Bangladesh never got going against a solid South Africa bowling attack. Kagiso Radaba, Anrich Norjte and Tabraiz Shamsi picked 8 wickets between each other as Bangladesh were bowled out for just 84 runs in the first innings.
Bangladesh seamer, Taskin Ahmed exhibited a sensational spell of fast bowling in the second innings. He took the key wickets of Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram, while giving away just 18 runs in his four overs.
However, the 84-run total was never going to be enough to defend and South Africa eventually chased down the score in 13.3 overs. Bangladesh have one last match remaining and they would look to end their campaign on a winning note.
