New Zealand’s opener Martin Guptill was the top run-scorer for his side in the previous T20 World Cup that took place in India. He stated that he will rely on that experience to help him perform this time around in the UAE.

The Black Caps will begin their campaign with a match against high-flying Pakistan, who crushed India by 10 wickets last night. Guptill, one of the Kiwis’ most aggressive batsmen, has a huge responsibility when he goes up against the likes of Shaheen Afridi.

Obviously I would’ve liked to have gone better, but that’s all in the past now. At the last World Cup in India, I was our top run-scorer, so I can draw on that experience and that confidence that I have been able to do it before.

I’m looking forward to just going out and doing my thing and making sure that I’m just being as positive as I can be at the top of the order. But once we get there and have a wee look and see how it’s playing, we can play accordingly,” he told Stuff.co.nz.

“Team that adapts quicker will win the game” – Martin Guptill

Martin Guptill spoke about the approach that will be taken by his team in conditions that aren’t conducive to batting. The UAE hasn’t been a high-scoring arena for the last few months and it isn’t set to change as the T20 World Cup goes on.

First and foremost, you just have to go out and try to be as positive as possible, and if it’s not conducive to hitting big shots, it’s about looking to rotate, looking to get off strike, and putting the bad ball away when it comes and just being clinical like that in putting partnerships together. It’s the team that adapts quicker in the conditions that you’re in that’s going to win the game,” Guptill added.

New Zealand has never reached the finals of a T20 World Cup and their best finish so far has been two semifinals. It will be interesting to see if they can go one step further this time around.
