T20 World Cup 2021: ICC Clarifies Seeding Rules For Qualifying Teams In Super-12 Stage
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released a statement that clarifies where a qualifying team will be placed if they qualify for the Super-12 stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021.
Earlier, the rules indicated that the top-ranked teams on the T20I Rankings would be seeded as A1 and B1 in the Super-12 stage. However, it has decided to alter the rules now. The team that finishes on top of Group A will be seeded as A1 and the same goes for Group B.
“The teams that finish top of the standings in Group A and Group B, will take the position of A1 and B1 in the Super 12s. Therefore, A2 and B2 will be taken by the second-place teams in each group respectively. It is not done on Round 1 group seedings,” the release statement from the apex council read.
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were the top-ranked teams in their respective qualifying groups. Now, their rankings won’t matter for the seeding they will get in the Super-12 (if they qualify).
Shakib al Hasan hopeful of qualifying by defeating PNG
Bangladesh all-rounder, Shakib al Hasan, is hopeful of defeating Papua New Guinea (PNG) and thereby improving their chances of qualifying for the Super-12 event. If they lose, they can still make it but they will be dependent on the result between Oman and Scotland.
“I feel if we can beat PNG we will be through and after that, we can say what we want to do next but first we have to qualify,” he added. “When we left the country we dreamt of achieving something big at the World Cup and we are still holding on to those dreams. Dreams cannot be changed every now and then,” Shakib said.
Bangladesh will play against PNG tomorrow afternoon which will be followed by the match between Oman and Scotland.
