Team India won’t progress in the T20 World Cup after New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by eight wickets on Sunday.
Afghanistan’s loss not only meant their run in the tournament would end, but also India exited along with them.
India out of T20 World Cup semi-final race
India lost their first two fixtures against Pakistan and New Zealand because of dismal performance with the bat, especially the top-order.
However, India won their next two games against Afghanistan and Scotland with heavy margins, but that was too late for Virat Kohli & co.
Indian team and their fans were hoping for Afghanistan to win against the Black Caps so that the former could qualify in the semis on a superior net run rate.
But that wasn’t the case for the Indians, and they will have to be satisfied with their position in Group 2.
This is the first time in seven years that India have failed to qualify for a knockout stage in the ICC event, and now, in the last three tournaments, they had to bow out against New Zealand.
I had India as my favourites to win T20 World Cup 2021: Nasser Hussain
Former England captain Nasser Hussain is of the opinion that India doesn’t have the fearless approach in their game, something that is a must to play multi-format tournaments.
Hussain also pointed out Indian batters struggle in early overs, especially against Pakistan in the Super 12 stage.
“You have got to go out and express yourself. They (India) have got so much talent. That may be the only thing that’s holding India back in ICC events. They don’t quite play the fearless brand of cricket that they deserve to because they are so talented,” Hussain was quoted as saying by T20 World Cup’s official website.
“I had them as favourites. They had been playing IPL here, are a star-studded side. They got a setback in that first game. The way Shaheen Afridi bowled in the powerplay, those two deliveries that Rohit and Rahul got would have got a lot of great cricketers out.
“That’s sometimes the problem with the Indian side. They are so good at the top, some of the middle-order don’t get much of a hit, and suddenly you need a Plan B, and that was found wanting,” he added.
India will play their final match of the group stage against Namibia on Monday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
