Bangladesh opener Liton Das and Sri Lankan bowler, Lahiru Kumara, were involved in a heated verbal argument during their T20 World Cup match on Sunday. The two teams are playing their first game of the Super 12 stage at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

The Bangla openers started off well in the powerplay after being asked to bat first by Lankan skipper, Dasun Shanaka. They kept the scoring rate around the 8rpo mark, registering regular boundaries when the field restrictions were on.

In the sixth over of the innings, things took a wild turn. Kumara bowled a great over and was rewarded with the wicket of Liton. Following the dismissal, Kumara had a couple of words to say to the dismissed batsman. Clearly agitated, Liton retorted back.

The two were then separated by the umpires and the Lankan players before things could get uglier. The tension at the ground was quite palpable as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have been involved in altercations before – the Nidahas trophy’s ‘Naagin Dance’ comes to mind.

Earlier, there was a minor incident where a charged-up Lahiru Kumara fired the ball at the stumps following which the youngster, Mohammad Naim, had to take evasive action. Although it didn’t amount to anything at the time, Liton’s reaction following the dismissal might just be his way of standing up for the youngster.
