Senior wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik feels that Rohit Sharma should be India‘s next captain in white-ball cricket.
Current skipper Virat Kohli had already decided that he will be stepping down as the T20I captain. According to recent reports, the BCCI is unhappy with India’s performance in the T20 World Cup and may drop Kohli as the ODI captain as well.
Rohit Sharma, who is Kohli’s deputy in limited-overs cricket, is the favourite to be the next white-ball India skipper.
Dinesh Karthik reckons the opener may be given the leadership for the next two years – for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia and the 2023 World Cup in India – while also grooming the likes of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as the vice-captains.
“It would be fair to give Rohit Sharma the opportunity to lead India for a year or two in the white-ball format. He can be the captain for a couple of World Cups and during that time, there will be a toss-up between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the vice-captain slot. Subsequently, the chosen one should be trusted with the leadership role over a period of time,” Dinesh Karthik told Cricbuzz.
You got to give Rohit the chance to represent the country as the captain: Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik feels Sharma deserves to be India’s full-time captain, highlighting his success in the IPL leading Mumbai Indians to five titles. Under Sharma, India also won the 2018 Asia Cup, when Kohli was rested.
“Indian team should go only because someone has won five IPL, the most high-pressure tournament in the whole world. You got to give him that credit and chance to represent the country as the captain. He has been really good in the limited time he led India in ODIs and T20Is. It shows he knows his skills,” the KKR wicketkeeper added.
As for Kohli, his last tournament as the T20I captain is not going India’s way. The Men In Blue have lost both their games and are on the brink of elimination.
