Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has said that under Virat Kohli, India have done pretty good in the home and away bilateral series. However, they have failed in the multi-country events.

India had a horrible start in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 as they faced a 10-wicket defeat against arch-rivals Pakistan, the second match was also a poor one for the team as they lost against New Zealand by 8 wickets which eventually resulted in India getting knocked out of the semi-finals race.

Speaking on Sports Today after India’s exit Gavaskar lauded Virat Kohli, the captain, for doing good in the bilateral series. He stated:

When you look at bilateral series, whether it’s at home or overseas, India have won most of them. But India haven’t done that well in multi-country events. You’ve got to balance that out. India have won more matches under Virat Kohli than under any other captain that I can think of.

Gavaskar further added that he would always prefer an ICC trophy over a bilateral series win. However, he said that bilateral series wins against quality sides like Australia is also as big as winning a World Cup. Sunil Gavaskar also said that winning a T20I series against England and West Indies is something he will cherish. He asserted:

I would prefer an ICC trophy because a multi-country event championship is something that you would cherish. But it also depends on which bilateral series that you are talking about.

“If you win a bilateral series against Australia, then that’s also as big as maybe winning the World Cup. Similarly, you will also cherish a T20I series win over England and West Indies.”
