Left-arm Surrey pacer Reece Topley has been added to England‘s squad as a replacement for Tymal Mills, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with a right thigh strain.
Tymal Mills, who is England’s join-leading wicket-taker with 7 scalps, left the field after bowling nine balls against Sri Lanka in Sharjah. The results of the subsequent scans on Tuesday night revealed the extent of the injury, which has ended his tournament before the semi-finals.
Reece Topley has been with the England contingent as a travelling reserve and, after approval from ICC Event Technical Committee, is now added to the 15-man squad replacing Tymal Mills, who had been excellent in England’s first three games, especially in the second half of the bowling innings.
The loss of the services of Tymal Mills further dents England who were already without Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, and Ben Stokes. The seamer’s absence further compounds Eoin Morgan’s worries as both Tom Curran and Mark Wood are also recovering from injuries which kept them away from England’s four matches so far.
Reece Topley has played 13 ODIs and 6 T20Is to date, taking 25 international wickets in total. Topley and David Willey are in line to replace Tymal Mills in the eleven when England take on South Africa in their last group game on Saturday in Sharjah.
The Three Lions are virtually locked in for a semi-final spot with 4 wins in 4 games and a healthy NRR of +3.183. South Africa, Australia, and West Indies are three other teams from Group 1 in contention for a semi-final berth.
England’s 15-man squad:
