England and Australia registered victories in Group 1 matches on the first day of the Super 12 stage of the T20 World  Cup 2021.

Eoin Morgan’s side had a memorable win over West Indies, bowling the opposition out for 55. Chasing a low total of 56, Jos Buttler started off with a cover drive in the first over off Akeal Hosein and another one in the second over, bowled by Ravi Rampaul. Jason Roy joined in the act, thumping Hosein for a maximum over cover before he was dismissed by Rampaul with a slower ball.

England did suffer a mini-collapse though. Jonny Bairstow got going with a couple of fours before lobbing a return catch to Hosein. Promoted up in the order, Moeen Ali ran himself out, and Liam Livingstone was spectacularly caught by Hosein on his own bowling.

After that, Buttler and skipper Morgan took the side over the finish line further unscathed.

While the toss didn’t go their way, as they were asked to bat first by Morgan, West Indies have only themselves to blame for their forgettable night with the bat. Evin Lewis did hit a six in the first over off Moeen Ali, but then the innings crumbled.

Chris Woakes deceived Lewis with a slower delivery before Ali struck twice with the wickets of Lendl Simmons and Shimron Hetmyer, both fell trying to hit out the off-spinner.

After stroking three boundaries, Chris Gayle was the next man to fall, to a short ball from Tymal Mills, leaving West Indies reeling at 31/4 at the end of the powerplay.

Chris Jordan accounted for the wicket of Dwayne Bravo before Mills got rid of Nicholas Pooran. And then Adil Rashid hit West Indies hard with three wickets – Andre Russell, Kieron Pollard, and Obed McCoy – in a space of 8 balls. The leg-spinner castled Rampaul for his fourth of the night as West Indies were bowled out for 55!

Earlier in the day, Australia defeated South Africa by 5 wickets in a low-scoring encounter to kick off their T20 World Cup 2021 campaign. Australia restricted the Proteas for 118, which they overhauled only in the last over. Pacer Josh Hazlewood was adjudged the Player of the Match for his figures of 2/19.
