Rumours of Varun Chakravarthy not being completely fit have only strengthened with time in the past few weeks. Now, it has been learned that he won’t be featuring in all the games of the T20 World Cup.
Varun Chakravarthy, who brings the mystery element to India‘s bowling attack and has been in fantastic form in IPL 2021, has been having knee injury issues while he was playing for KKR.
As per a report in Inside Sport, he isn’t expected to feature in all the games for India at the showpiece event because the management fears exacerbating his injury.
“He is undoubtedly a match-winner in this format and the leadership group knows what four overs can mean in a big tournament like the T20 World Cup. The medical team has been working closely with him and Varun will be used judiciously. He is a trump card and Virat Kohli and the leadership group is looking to use him just like that,” a source in the know of developments was quoted as saying by Inside Sport.
Varun Chakravarthy to play in “must-win or big game”: Source
Varun Chakravarthy, who has bagged 35 wickets in the last two IPL seasons for KKR at an economy of less than 7, will be used only in “must-win or big game”, the source added, confirming that the spinner’s knees “aren’t 100 per cent” while going in the Super 12 stage.
He played in the warm-up match versus Australia and bowled just 2 overs.
“Yes, that is exactly what the idea is (on keeping him out of the team in matches with low stakes). While the team is looking to have his services as much as possible, it is also clear that his knees aren’t 100 percent. So, he will be used as per the demands of the tournament.
“If it is a must-win or big game, you will see him out there weaving his magic with the ball. If the team is well placed and you can afford to give his knees a bit of a rest, the team might do that. But yes, MS Dhoni and Ravi Shastri will be right there to guide Kohli and Rohit Sharma in such a scenario,” the source explained.
India will take on Pakistan in their opening encounter on Sunday in Dubai. They will then meet New Zealand, Afghanistan, Scotland, and Namibia in the Super 12.
