The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on September 8, 2021, announced the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 to be played from October 17, 2021, with the final of the tournament to be played on November 14, 2021. The squad left Twitterverse in disbelief with the exclusion of Shikhar Dhawan and Yuzvendra Chahal.

The BCCI named some of the regulars like Virat Kohli as captain and Rohit Sharma as the vice-captain of the team. KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammad Shami were expected.

In addition to them, Rahul Chahar, Suryakumar Yadav, and Ishan Kishan were rewarded for the recent performances for India against England and Sri Lanka respectively. Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin were picked up seemingly as the backup for some first-choice players.

Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar were named in the reserves.

Exclusion Of Shikhar Dhawan And Yuzvendra Chahal From India’s WT20 Squad Sends Twitterverse Into A Frenzy

However, the bigger surprise was the exclusion of two of the players who have recently done well for India in the T20I format in opener Shikhar Dhawan and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Dhawan had recently captained the Indian team on the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, where India won the ODI series but lost the T20I series.

Chahal was part of the Indian team since his debut in 2016, having played in the ICC World Cup 2019 and other important tournaments including the Asia Cup 2018 where India won the whole thing.

However, both Dhawan and Chahal were struggling with their form. With Chahal being dropped from the side as well for a couple of series. BCCI, therefore, included Rahul Chahar as the frontline leg-spinner with Varun Chakravarthy for the company.

The board also saw that Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli were enough options to choose as openers from the squad and probably decided to not include Dhawan, who had played just one T20I during the home England series and has not been part of the regular setup.

But the Twitterverse was not down with their exclusions as they came up with surprised reactions to Yuzvendra Chahal and Shikhar Dhawan being dropped from the Indian Team for the T20 World Cup 2021.
