Twitter In Disbelief As Shikhar Dhawan And Yuzvendra Chahal Get Dropped From India's T20 World Cup Squad
Updated - 09 Sep 2021, 12:16 AM
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on September 8, 2021, announced the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 to be played from October 17, 2021, with the final of the tournament to be played on November 14, 2021. The squad left Twitterverse in disbelief with the exclusion of Shikhar Dhawan and Yuzvendra Chahal.
The BCCI named some of the regulars like Virat Kohli as captain and Rohit Sharma as the vice-captain of the team. KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammad Shami were expected.
In addition to them, Rahul Chahar, Suryakumar Yadav, and Ishan Kishan were rewarded for the recent performances for India against England and Sri Lanka respectively. Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin were picked up seemingly as the backup for some first-choice players.
Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar were named in the reserves.
Exclusion Of Shikhar Dhawan And Yuzvendra Chahal From India’s WT20 Squad Sends Twitterverse Into A Frenzy
However, the bigger surprise was the exclusion of two of the players who have recently done well for India in the T20I format in opener Shikhar Dhawan and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Dhawan had recently captained the Indian team on the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, where India won the ODI series but lost the T20I series.
Chahal was part of the Indian team since his debut in 2016, having played in the ICC World Cup 2019 and other important tournaments including the Asia Cup 2018 where India won the whole thing.
However, both Dhawan and Chahal were struggling with their form. With Chahal being dropped from the side as well for a couple of series. BCCI, therefore, included Rahul Chahar as the frontline leg-spinner with Varun Chakravarthy for the company.
The board also saw that Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli were enough options to choose as openers from the squad and probably decided to not include Dhawan, who had played just one T20I during the home England series and has not been part of the regular setup.
But the Twitterverse was not down with their exclusions as they came up with surprised reactions to Yuzvendra Chahal and Shikhar Dhawan being dropped from the Indian Team for the T20 World Cup 2021.
Here are some of the reactions:

Good to see Ash back, his experience is invaluable. I would have also opted for two wrist spinners keeping the conditions in mind. All the best to the guys who got selected for the Indian Team for the T20 World Cup. I do feel for Shardul,Shreyas and Deepak, but it is what it is.

R Ashwin is back in the T20 WC team. No Yuzvendra Chahal. Spinners: Jadeja, Ashwin, Varun Chakravarthy, Rahul Chahar & Axar Patel.
Pacers: Bumrah, Bhuvi, Shami
WK: Kishan, Pant
Batsmen: Rohit,Kohli,KL,Suryakumar
Finisher: Hardik
Standby players: Shardul, Shreyas, Deepak Chahar— Sarang Bhalerao (@bhaleraosarang) September 8, 2021
Biggest news is that Ashwin is recalled to the #T20WorldCup team. No other spinner turns the ball away from left handers. No Chahal means a big vote of confidence in Rahul Chahar. Bit hard on Shreyas Iyer

Five spinners. Three pacers. Plus Hardik. I’m surprised at Deepak Chahar’s exclusion. Ashwin’s inclusion is the right one…imagine Jadeja-Ashwin-Chahal playing together. Waaah waaah. #T20WorldCup #IndianCricketTeam

Clearly this is a team picked on the assumption that spin will play a big part. 5 spinners. Big grounds in Dubai and Abu Dhabi a big factor. Had expected Deepak Chahar in place of one spinner. Axar, the surprise
