T20 World Cup 2021: Twitter Reacts As England Defeat Sri Lanka, Qualify For Semi-Finals

England defeated Sri Lanka by 26 runs to register their fourth successive win in the Super 12 stage, pretty much securing a berth in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup.

Chasing a target of 164 on a tricky Sharjah wicket, the Lankans gave it their all but couldn’t overcome some good death bowling coupled with excellent fielding from the English unit. They were off to a horrendous start, losing Pathum Nissanka in the very first over.

Things continued to go downhill but the middle order took the responsibility, stitching valuable partnerships throughout. At a point in time, Wanindu Hasaranga and Dasun Shanaka were running away with the game before both were dismissed in a matter of three deliveries, ending the Lankan hopes.

Earlier, Jos Buttler did the bulk of the scoring for England. He hit his first T20 international century, becoming the first Englishman to score a hundred in all three formats of the game. Buttler managed to dig his team out of a hole after they had slipped to 36/3.

Scoring wasn’t easy as it has been at Sharjah this season and the focus of skipper, Eoin Morgan and Buttler was to build a partnership in the middle overs. They were successful in doing so, before launching a scathing attack on the Lankan pacers.

Only 47 runs came in the first ten overs but the final ten saw a whopping 116 runs being scored. The momentum swung completely in favor of England despite the spinners wreaking havoc throughout the innings. The win also means Morgan and co. are guaranteed a spot in the semis unless an unforeseen event happens.
